How to export a KakaoTalk chat as text
The most reliable way to get a KakaoTalk chat out as text is the built-in "Export Chats" feature. Instead of scrolling and copying message by message, the chat is saved as a single text file. This page walks through the steps for each app, then shows how to hand the text to ChatGPT, Gemini or another AI.
KakaoTalk for Windows: Export Chats
On PC, you can export straight from the chat room menu.
- Open the chat room you want as text in KakaoTalk on PC.
- Click the hamburger menu (≡) at the top right.
- Click Chats > Export Chats (Ctrl+S).
- Set a filename and save it where you like. It is saved as a .txt text file.
KakaoTalk for Mac: Save as Text File
On Mac, use menu (≡) → Chat Room Settings → Manage Chat History → Save as Text File.
Despite the button name, it saves a .csv file. You can open it in Excel or Numbers, but upload it to TalkCut as is, without editing.
What the exported text contains
The Windows file starts with the chat room name and the save date (the Mac file has neither), followed by each message with its sender, time and text. The line layout differs slightly between Windows and Mac, and TalkCut detects both automatically.
Photos, videos and documents shared in the chat are not included in the text file.
You could drag and copy messages instead, but it is easy to miss some when scrolling through weeks of chat. For anything longer than a few screens, exporting is faster and more accurate.
Putting the text into ChatGPT or Gemini
You can paste the whole file into an AI, but with a long chat it may skip the early part or hit its length limit. You get better results by cutting out only the dates you care about and adding summary instructions. TalkCut does this in your browser and never sends the file to a server.
- Upload the exported file (.txt or .csv) on the TalkCut home page.
- Choose a date and time range, narrow down speakers if needed, and pick a detail level.
- On the result screen, copy the text with the summary instructions attached, or download it as a .txt file, and paste it into ChatGPT, Gemini or Claude.
If something goes wrong
- Do not open and re-save the export: saving it from Notepad or Excel can change the line format or encoding so it is no longer recognized. Export again from KakaoTalk and use the original.
- Months of chat? See "When a chat is too long for the AI to read" for splitting by period and merging the summaries.
- Upload errors? See "When your KakaoTalk export file won't upload" for causes and fixes by error message.
- Be careful when sharing: the export contains everyone's messages, not just yours. Check before sending or posting it anywhere.
