Pull only the final plans out of a trip or meetup group chat
A group chat for planning a trip grows to hundreds of messages within days. Options, votes and recalculated budgets are all mixed together, so finding "what did we finally decide?" means a lot of scrolling. This article shows how to extract only the final decisions and to-dos, using the sample chat on the TalkCut home page (planning a trip to Jeju) as an example.
Why a plain summary falls short
Planning chats have one defining trait: decisions change. In the sample chat, lodging was chosen by vote from three options, and the group fund started at 300,000 won per person before a budget recheck added "50,000 won more on day one".
If you just ask an AI to "summarize this", intermediate numbers (like the first estimate of 283,000 won) can appear alongside the final ones, and rejected options like the hotel may stay in the summary. With chats like this, the key is telling the AI exactly what to extract.
Settings in TalkCut
- Date range: from the day planning started to today. If the chat also covers a previous trip, starting at this plan's first day leaves the old messages out.
- Speakers: select all. Decisions usually come from several people's replies, so picking one person loses who agreed to what.
- Detail level: Moderate. It groups by topic, so schedule, lodging and costs are listed separately.
Add one request to the prompt
The prompt on the step 3 result screen is editable. Adding a request like this under the default instructions makes the result much more useful.
- If something changed, list only the final decision and note the change briefly in parentheses - Split it into [Decided] [To-dos per person] [Still open] - Separate per-person and total amounts
An example from the sample chat
TalkCut formats the extracted text with date separators and [name] [time] lines, as below. Photos and emoticons appear only as the words "Photo" or "Emoticon", not as files. (The sample chat is in Korean; this excerpt is translated.)
--- 2026-09-04 --- [Friend2] [7:00 PM] If food is 60k and extras 10k, that's 353k. 53k over budget [Friend1] [7:02 PM] Let's collect about 50k more on site. As long as we know in advance [Friend3] [7:03 PM] ok [Friend4] [7:04 PM] Agreed [Friend2] [7:05 PM] So 50k more per person on day one. That's the announcement
What the result looks like
With those settings and the added request, the AI returns something like this. Exact wording varies by AI service.
[Decided] - Dates: Oct 3 (Sat) to Oct 5 (Mon), 2 nights - Flights: Gimpo 10:20 on the 3rd, Jeju 19:05 on the 5th (booked) - Lodging: private house in Aewol, 2 nights (unanimous vote, deposit paid) - Group fund: 300,000 won per person paid + 50,000 won more on day one (changed after budget recheck) [To-dos per person] - Friend2: final car rental booking - Friend3: barbecue shopping list - Friend4: share final itinerary [Still open] - Backup plan if a typhoon hits (decide 3 days before departure)
Always check numbers against the original
AIs sometimes add up amounts or swap per-person and total figures. Before posting anything involving money back to the group, find the original message in the extracted text. Searching the amount with your browser's find (Ctrl+F) in the "Extracted Chat" box on step 3 is the quickest way.
