TalkCut

When your KakaoTalk export file won't upload

TalkCut is built around chat files exported from KakaoTalk for PC (Windows and Mac). If you see an error after uploading, find the message below.

"Only .txt or .csv files are supported."

TalkCut only accepts files whose names end in .txt or .csv. KakaoTalk for Windows saves .txt, and KakaoTalk for Mac saves .csv.

This error usually means a file other than the chat export was selected. Photos and documents shared in the chat are not part of the export, so look for the text file you saved when exporting. Renaming a file's extension does not help either; if the content is not a chat export, it will fail at the next step.

A .csv file on Mac is normal

On Mac, export with menu (≡) → Chat Room Settings → Manage Chat History → Save as Text File. Despite the name, it saves a .csv file. Upload it as is; there is no need to open or fix it in Excel.

Mac files do not contain the chat room name, so TalkCut uses the file name instead. If the room name in the prompt looks odd, rename the file before uploading or edit the prompt on the result screen.

"Couldn't recognize the KakaoTalk export format."

The file opened, but not a single chat message was found in it. Common causes:

  • The export was edited: opening and saving it in Notepad or Excel can change the line format or text encoding. Export again from KakaoTalk and upload the original.
  • Garbled text: TalkCut reads files as UTF-8. A file re-saved in another encoding has broken characters, so dates and names cannot be found. Again, re-exporting is the fastest fix.
  • Only join/leave records, no messages: system messages are excluded, so nothing may remain.
  • A file from another messenger: TalkCut only reads the KakaoTalk export format.

"No messages found in the selected date range."

The file was read correctly, but no message matches the conditions chosen in step 2. Check the "messages in this range" count under the date range first.

If no speaker is selected, you will not see this error; instead the "Extract" button stays disabled. Check at least one speaker.

  • The time range is reversed: if the start and end dates are the same day and the start time is later than the end time, nothing matches.
  • An old speaker selection remains after changing dates: the people you picked may not have spoken in the new range. The speaker list follows the date range, so re-check it after changing dates.

"File is too large. (Max 50MB)"

50MB is hundreds of thousands of lines of text, which only happens with large group chats used for years. Since everything runs in your browser, larger files can freeze the page on some computers, hence the limit.

If you hit it, let us know via the contact email so we can improve. A chat that long cannot go into an AI at once anyway; see "When a chat is too long for the AI to read" for how to split it by date.

Still not working?

TalkCut has been verified with KakaoTalk for Windows (.txt) and Mac (.csv) files. If nothing above helps, email us via the contact address at the bottom of the page with the device and KakaoTalk version you exported from. You do not need to send the chat itself. The format of the first few lines (with names hidden) is enough to find the cause.
